Kiwibuild Skills Shortages List - NZ to make it easier to hire overseas construction workers

The KiwiBuild Skilled Shortages List - How it can help you find work in New Zealand

New Zealand is building! Alongside an enormous amount of work and opportunity in the private construction sector, the current New Zealand Government has big infrastructure plans, including (amongst other things) a $28 billion transport revamp for Auckland, 100,000 new affordable KiwiBuild houses and various other big infrastructure projects. However, it’s no secret that New Zealand has a huge shortage of workers in the building and construction industry. Currently, there is a shortage of around 30,000 workers in the NZ building and construction sector and it’s forecast that around 60,000 more workers will be needed over the next five (5) years.

To help with New Zealand’s need for construction workers, in June 2018, the New Zealand Government proposed amending the KiwiBuild Visa plan to make it easier for New Zealand Employers to hire overseas workers in the Building and Construction Industry. A release published by the Honorable Iain Lees-Galloway which summarises the proposed changes can be found here.

What does the skills shortage list mean?

Amongst the proposed changes, the KiwiBuild Skills Shortage List aims to make the process for New Zealand Building and Construction Industry Employers to hire overseas workers easier. The KiwiBuild Skills Shortage List:

  • Removes the requirement for a “market test” to be carried out each time an employer needs to hire overseas workers.
  • Means that there will be no need to create and implement a whole new visa category for overseas workers.
  • Allows the KiwiBuild Visa to apply to more foreign workers, more easily.

What does this mean for foreign workers wanting a job in New Zealand?

There simply aren’t enough trained Kiwi’s to fill all required construction jobs in New Zealand and New Zealand needs foreign workers for these jobs. Foreign workers who are looking to work in the building and construction industry in New Zealand, should keep their eyes on the Construction and Infrastructure Skill Shortages List on the Immigration New Zealand Website.
