Ensuring safe workplaces

What protections are in place for workers, can your employment be terminated if you report a health and safety issue or refuse to work because you believe it’s unsafe to do so, and what you can do if your business is not involving workers in health and safety?

And what can you do to stay safe at work? ACTL had a few good ideas:

Staying safe at work, no matter where it is that you work, is a big deal. Sometimes we don’t really pay much attention to it but it’s very essential for each and every one of us who are doing the 9 to 5…or any other work hours we’ve got.

You want to be able to reduce the risk of illnesses or injuries at work. You and your employer need to have a general knowledge of the following tips about workplace safety. Follow this list and see how it can enlighten you.

You need to know the risks that your particular job entails. That way, you can take the necessary steps to stop such injuries or such illnesses that can possibly happen.

Try to lessen on the amount of stress in the workplace. Stress is much more damaging than people think. It can lead to a long list of problems, such as lack of concentration, lack of sleep, depression and more. You may experience stress because of the pressure placed on you at work, the lengthy work hours, conflicts within the workplace, etc.

Now and then, take a break. Doing this can help you to stay awake and alert, causing you to be less likely to sustain injury or exhaustion.

Don’t stop or twist. Make use of the ergonomically designed furniture or equipment provided to make certain tasks easier.

Try to use mechanical aids when you can. They were meant to make work easier, so use things like a conveyor belt or forklift to help you carry or lift a heavy object.

Always protect your back by keeping heavy loads close to your body and using your thigh muscles when carrying or lifting heavy loads, respectively.

Use the protective gear for the task. You need to wear it and wear it correctly in order to reduce the risk of you sustaining an injury.

Don’t use alcohol or drugs when you have to work. They can alter your sense of perception and reality and cause you to sustain serious and life threatening injuries. They are actually a key factor in about 3% of workplace deaths.

Speak to your employer or HR manager about any concerns you have in relation to safety hazards and risks in the work place.

You have rights and you should know them. You can reach out to organisations, (such as us) to get information or advice on any of your concerns in relation to workplace safety issues.
